Judge Samuel Sewall 1652-1730
See photo 10:
Samuel Sewall was born in Hampshire, England, the grandson of Henry Sewall, the mayor of Coventry. A devout Puritan, Sewall was an associate magistrate at the Salem Witch Trials. A graduate of Harvard, he is noted for publicly regretting his participation in the Trials.
Sewall was one of the first colonial figures to come out against slavery. "Liberty is in real value next unto life; None ought
to part with themselves, or deprive others of it, but upon the most mature consideration."
